A soft cake, a classic combination of flavors, perfect in their simplicity. Use the new Decora compass to make and place perfectly symmetrical decorations and much more. To learn how, watch the Tutorial.
Whisk the butter with the sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, the salt, the sifted flour and the baking powder. Finally add the flavor, mixing well with a spatula. Pour the mixture into a mold and bake it for about 35 minutes at 170° C. Take it out of the oven and let it stand. For the filling use our flavored spread. You can use the royal icing or the flavored cream too, to dress the edges of the cake thus covering it with sugar paste.
How to divide a cake in equal parts using the compass and the mat
First of all, let’s learn how to divide a cake in equal parts, this will be useful for all the other uses of the kit. The kit allows you to divide in equal parts cakes up to 60 cm diameter or side. You can divide a cake from 4 to 16 equal parts. Measure the diameter of your cake with the compass and use the ruler drawn on the mat to get the size in cm. Now, taking as reference point the diameter of your cake and starting from the number drawn on the mat, decide in how many equal sections you want to divide it (in 4 sections 1:4, in nine sections 1:9 up to 16 sections 1:16). Colors and diagonal lines will help you. Place the compass on the chosen section and adjust the width opening or closing the small “legs” of the compass. Fix the width screwing the fastener.
Depending on the kind of decorations you want to make, slightly mark the upper edge, the sides and/or the base of the cake using the tips of the “legs”; in this way you’ll obtain reference points that will permit you to divide the cake in equal parts.
These are useful reference points for the different operations you can make with the kit:
– they allow you positioning and/or making symmetrical decorations;
– they allow you making perfect festoons, garlands and decorations;
– they allow you cutting equal portions.
Make perfect garlands and festoons
For this operation you’ll use one of the three marker bands included in the kit. (The other two have been supplied as spare parts). Choose the width of the garlands or of the festoons you wish to make by fixing the marker band to the compass using the various holes, so to increase or decrease its size. Put the compass close to the cake, place the marker band close to the edge you want to decorate and press slightly so to imprint points on the surface. Do this operation again for all the sections in which you have divided your cake so to mark the guidelines to follow to make perfect decorations!
Position symmetrical decorations
Once sections have been marked on the cake, position and make perfectly symmetrical decorations!
